Fractional Laser Resurfacing Information
Fractional lasers shoot small dots of laser light onto the skin (like the dots on a die) meaning that only a fraction of the skin is treated resulting in less downtime. We can adjust the energy of the treatment to suit your goals and expected downtime. See great results in texture, fine lines, sun spots and acne scarring. A course of treatments is always recommended for best results.
Why choose factional laser resurfacing?
Fractional laser treatment is the gold standard for acne scarring, poor texture, large pores, pigmentation and lines/wrinkles. But treatment doesn’t have to be an aggressive one – a single pass over the entire face (Laser Peel) gives minimal downtime – redness for up to 48 hours and is suitable for all skin types and colours. We adjust the treatment settings to match the severity of your condition and the amount of downtime you are able to accommodate.
Erbium YAG vs CO2
The two most common types of laser used in fractional laser treatments are Er:YAG (Erbium YAG) and CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). Both can give excellent results but CO2 can give a more aggressive response with longer and more significant downtime. We have chosen to offer Er:YAG as our city clientele are rarely able to give up more time from their schedules than absolutely necessary.
How much down time is involved?
For good improvements in deeper concerns such as acne scarring, a stronger treatment is needed which can leave the skin red and angry dry for several days and back to work looking presentable in a week. A more gentle treatment could be performed on a Thursday and back to work on Monday. The options are discussed at your consultation and can be trialled at your test patch.
Test patches
A test patch allows us to use different settings and monitor how your skin responds. It is usually done just in front of your ear or along the jaw line – somewhere out of the way. No test patch is required for the more gentle laser peel but is needed for all others and is best done 2 weeks before treatment.

Fractional Laser Frequently Asked Questions
Erbium YAG fractional laser can treat a wide range of conditions and so a consultation is important for your condition to be assessed and individual advice given.
You’ll feel surprisingly little during the treatment itself… small gentle pings on the skin. It’s not until after the treatment that you will start to feel heat in the treated area – how much depends on the strength of the treatment. With a light laser peel, it will be generally warm. For a deeper acne scarring treatment, the evening may be uncomfortably hot and some may want to take a paracetamol to make it more comfortable. By the next day, although the skin may feel delicate, most of the heat should have gone.
Immediately after treatment your skin will be red and may be mildly swollen depending on the size and strength of treatment. This can take 1-5 days to completely recover, again, depending on the treatment.
Depending on the condition treated, results can be seen within weeks but full results in conditions such as acne scarring are seen up to 6 months after treatment.
